About Holly Thomas

I have been in EMS since 2009. Ever since I was 5 years old, I knew I needed to be in the medical field. I have worked a lot of jobs in EMS, mostly because I always want to learn and do something new. So, I have done 911 ambulance, interfacility transfers, I have worked in multiple war and disaster zones. I have set up hospitals in a several different states and different countries, I have worked on movie sets, and more. I love medicine, and I am fascinated by it. I want to experience everything I possibly can by doing different things, and by traveling to a lot of different locations, and I want to share those experiences with others, including my students.

NREMT and YOU!

The National Registry has been active since 1970.  Prior to its implementation, people working on an ambulance were basically just taxi drivers.  I know that also seems to be the case sometimes now, however prior to the 1960s and 1970s ambulance crews would basically just pick up a patient and drive them to a hospital or [...]

Scene Safety or are you joking?

If I asked you what phrase immediately comes to mine when you think of EMT school, paramedic school, working at your job, trainings, etc.?   Is that phrase “BSI, scene safe”? In my nearly 20-year career working as a medic I have probably heard that phrase thousands of times.  Between taking classes, teaching classes, training at new [...]

Traumagel for Bleeding control

Uncontrolled bleeding causes death.  More than 1 million people die every year because they bleed out.  That means bleeding control sometimes needs to be quick, aggressive, and effective.  When it comes to life threatening bleeding, there are a lot of ways to attempt to control it: direct pressure, elevation, restrict movement, tourniquets, pressure dressings, wound [...]

911 Phone Tracking

If you have ever called 911, the dispatcher, operator, or call taker likely asked you for the phone number you were calling from as well as the address of your emergency.  With today’s technology, it is very possible the 911 center already had that information pop up on their screen as soon as you called, so [...]

Lights and Sirens: Dangerous or helpful?

Anyone who has driven an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens knows that it can be fun, it gets your adrenaline bumping, and a lot of us become giddy, like a kid in a candy store. But with some of us, it activates our innate road rage tenancies. Other than the obvious, it’s fun and [...]

EMS Fitness

When it comes to working as a first responder, EMT, Paramedic, firefighter, or something else, how do you feel about your personal level of fitness? Do you feel like you are physically and mentally ready for whatever the job throws at you, or do you think there is room for improvement? I think for most [...]

Getting involved early, Explorer Programs.

Most people don’t know what they want to be or do when they grow up.  Even adults are often lost, when it comes to picking a career. When you are close to finishing high school or college it becomes the number one topic, what are you going to do?  Many people feel the pressure to [...]

Prevention, help them help themselves.

As a first responder, we have a duty to the public. If someone calls 911 for any reason, we have a duty to help them whether it’s a medical emergency, trauma, psychiatric issue, or something else. We have a duty to help achieve the best possible outcome. However, just helping when they ask for help, [...]

Ketamine’s effect on cerebral perfusion

Were you ever told not to give Ketamine to your head injury patients, hypertensive patients, increased intracranial pressure (ICP) patients? I was taught that. “Early studies suggested that ketamine could increase intracranial pressure, decreasing cerebral perfusion pressure and thereby reducing oxygen supply to the damaged cerebral cortex.” (NIH, 2022). There have been 11 recent studies [...]

Weight Loss: Are Shots the Solution?

As of 2017, it is reported that at least 75 percent of American adults are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese, so it is not surprising that more and more people are trying to lose weight. I know that we have all heard about the recently popular weight loss shots: Ozempic (Semaglutide), Mounjaro (Terzepatide), Wegovy, Zepbound, [...]
