California Emergency Medical Services Authority Requirements

  • Although we strive to keep everything updated, please check with your state EMS Representative for the most current re-certification information.

  • California continuing education requires a minimum of 50% Live education.  § 100391.1. (a) (9)

  • Paramedic (EMT-P) licenses

    • Expire the last day of the month two years from the date of initial licensure. California Health and Safety Code, Division 2.5., Chapter 2, Article 5, 1797.194(c).
    • Require 48 hours every two years, 50% must be Live education.  CCR, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 4, Article 6 § 100167(2).
  • Advanced EMT certificates

    • Expire the final day of the month two years from the date of initial certification. CCR, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 3, Article 4 § 100123(l).
    • Require 36 hours every two years, 50% must be Live education.CCR, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 3, Article 4 § 100124(b).
  • EMT certificates

    • Expire the last day of the month two years from the date of the initial certification. CCR, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 2, Article 4 § 100079(e). The State of California does not certify, renew or reinstate EMT certifications. This is done by the local EMS agency and other authorized certifying entities.
    • Require 24 hours every two years, 50% must be Live education. EMTs may either complete a 24-hour refresher course from an approved EMT training program or obtain at least 24 hours of continuing education. CCR, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 2, Article 5 § 100080 (2)(A)(B).
