Requirements for Re-Entry
Paramedic Lapsed Certification
Paramedic Re-entry Pathway
If you have a lapsed National Registry Paramedic certification or lapsed state Paramedic license, including an equivalent state-recognized Paramedic certification, and want to gain National Registry Paramedic certification, you must meet the following requirements:
Requirements for Certification
- 60 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years. DistanceCME recommends our NREMT Paramedic Refresher Course 60 Hours.*This bundle does not include a CPR Certification
- The National Registry accepts State EMS Office approved and CAPCE accredited education, education from EMS education programs, and U.S. accredited academic credit or college course. All education must be directly related to EMS patient care.
- Successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic cognitive (knowledge) examination and psychomotor (skills) examination.
- Passed portions of the cognitive and psychomotor exam remain valid for 24 months provided all other eligibility requirements are met.
- Copy of a lapsed state Paramedic license/certification if never nationally certified as a Paramedic.
- Have a current CPR-BLS for “Healthcare Provider” or equivalent credential. DistanceCME recommends our eCPR for Healthcare Providers
AEMT Lapsed Certification
AEMT Re-entry Pathway
If you have a lapsed National Registry AEMT certification, lapsed state AEMT license including a lapsed equivalent AEMT certification, or recognized higher level of EMS certification and want to gain National Registry AEMT certification, you must meet the following requirements:

- 50 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the current National Component of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years. DistanceCME recommends our NREMT AEMT Refresher Course 50 Hours. *This bundle does not include a CPR Certification
- The National Registry accepts State EMS Office approved and CAPCE accredited education, education from EMS education programs, and U.S. accredited academic credit or college course. All education must be directly related to EMS patient care.
- Successful completion of the National Registry AEMT cognitive (knowledge) examination and psychomotor (skills) examination.

EMR Lapsed Certification
EMR Reinstatement
If the recertification application was not received by the September 30 deadline, but all educational requirements were completed by September 30 deadline, individuals may seek reinstatement of the National EMS Certification until October 31. There is a $50 reinstatement fee in addition to the standard $15 recertification fee ($65 total). Please see NREMT EMR Re-Instatement page.
EMR Lapsed
If your EMR state license has lapsed, or National EMR Certification has lapsed, you must complete an entire state-approved Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course and complete the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Requirements
NREMT licensees must renew every 2 years on March 31st.
Renewal applications received after March 31st will not guarantee the applicant’s license will be processed in time to avoid expiring
All licenses expire at midnight on March 31st in the stated year of their expiration.
